I started the restoration with the engine for two reasons first of all I thought
that this would be the most expensive part. (I was wrong at about six hundred dollars the engine was
not that expensive) second the engine and box had both seized. The gearbox just needed freeing up the engine though
needed a lot more work.
The first job was to pull down the motor and box and find out what
was what.
The Gearbox was in pretty good condition the selector had seized
but other than that not to bad at all. the seized selector was a easy
fix take it out clean it up, lube and reassemble.
The engine on the other hand was another story the first thing I saw
when I took the right hand side cover off was that the oil pump was
laying at the bottom of the engine apparently having seized and then
broken off.
As the engine came apart the news didn’t get any better. The engine
had been apart before and the work had been done very very poorly.
The wrong main bearings had been used . These bearings had
nether oil holes in the inner race or a locating groove in the outer race
The lack of a oil hole meant not only the bearing did not have a oil
feed but that the oil flow though the whole motor would’ve been
affected )
this is the pump I found in the bottom of the engine
As for the locating groove the genius who did the work last time got
around this by screwing a self tapping screw in to the casing to lock
the bearing in place.
Luckily the damage to the casing was not to bad.
Other than that the big end bearings were shot (the wrong mains
wouldn’t have helped this) new pistons and rings and new exhaust
valve were needed.
I got lucky in that when I got the bike I also brought three boxes of
parts in one of the boxes was a oil pump and a spare crank this
solved the oil pump and big end problem. I was able to get new the
main bearings , pistons and rings ( the pistons are not the original the
only difference being a longer skirt and smaller gudgeon pin hole a
easy job for a good engine shop
This is the finished engine as you can see I finished the engine by painting the bore with black high temperature
paint. I'm pleased with the end result
